Portwine stain (PWS) / Portwine Angioma

PWS on the lower eyelid (arrowed)
**Port wine stain (PWS) is a kind of congenital angioma showing a reddish plaque or patch. This condition originates in the dilatation and proliferation of small blood vessels in the upper dermis. The red colour is due to abundant blood flow in the vessels. Dye laser treatment is most effective against this disease. This laser light is absorbed only into oxyhaemoglobin, the sourse of the reddish colour in the red blood cell, and generated heat energy in the taget brings an instant occulusion in the blood vessels. Although repetitive treatments requires (every 3 months), the colour of the angioma will gradually disappears.
The National Health Insurance Program in Japan will cover 70% of the total cost for the laser treatment.
